Fiona Cath
Personal Trainer
I believe that resistance training and flexibility enables people to have a better quality of life. If intense enough to get into the cardio zone; hormones are released, metabolism increases, cardiovascular fitness improves and eventually body composition changes.
Having been a veterinary nurse and a school teacher, I have a broad experience of people and work collaboratively to get the best out of them. I am a people person; fascinated by psychology.
I get tremendous satisfaction from Personal Training because I am supporting my clients to improve their quality of life.

The Shed
A purposeful space with beautiful country views
The Shed enables me to work with clients in a
well equipped, private environment with inspiring country views: a setting that is conducive to positive wellbeing. There are no interruptions other than the wildlife and distant farming activities.
The Power Rack enables a great range of exercises to be performed safely. There is also a cable machine which is great to work the back and isolate areas that need specific work.
Buddy Training
A popular choice
Buddy training gives clients the opportunity to motivate each other with an element of camaraderie during workouts. I can adapt the exercises to suit the ability of each person, making sure that each person feels that they have enjoyed a challenging workout.
How can I help you?
PERSONAL TRAINING
I will:
- create workouts specifically for you and based on your goals
- consider you holistically, taking into consideration lifestyle, eating habits, sleep, activity levels, preferences and medical history
- teach you about the benefits of exercise with a refreshing perspective
- take baseline information to improve on
- include a variety of actions and movements to improve how you function in everyday life
- offer support, guidance and motivation - making exercise fun
Dead-bug with weights
A great core exercise which supports the back (providing your legs lower without curving the spine). Adapt by restricting the depth of leg lowering.
Kettlebell - single leg row
A great whole body exercise which challenges balance too.
Did you know ... balance challenges help protect against dementia?
Split jerk
I am regularly coached in Olympic Weight-lightlifting by George Barsby at Kingdom Barbell, Salisbury.
It is really important to keep learning and working on technique as a Personal Trainer.
I can 'feel' the effects of good balance and also when balance is not so good. I love the challenge!
It also keeps me real on expectations of my clients.
After completing my own coaching qualification, I believe in 'walking the walk'.
Kettlebells for Everyone
Kettlebell Benefits for Everyone
Kettlebells aren’t only for elite athletes; they benefit all fitness enthusiasts from pregnant women to experienced weightlifters!
There are a whole variety of exercises and actions that can be achieved with kettlebells. The dynamic nature of kettlebell training promotes flexibility as movement takes place through an increased range of motion (ROM). The whole body is often involved as many parts are being challenged by gravitational force. This means that lower weights can be very effective.
For example, swinging an 8kg kettlebell could equate to 56kg pulling force with each kettlebell swing action.
Technique is also key although exercises such as the kettlebell swing is really quite straightforward to learn. It improves posture, strengthens your posterior chain, strengthens the heart AND can help you to lose weight. If you learn more kettlebell exercises, this opens up the opportunity to vary the workout and create fun circuits or complexes (a number of kettlebell exercises completed using repetitions and sets).
Improved cardiovascular fitness
In a recent study,12 mins of kettlebell swings using a 16kg kettlebell revealed:
“Continuous kettlebell swings can impart a metabolic challenge of sufficient intensity to increase Vo2max” and concluded “coaches may improve the cardio respiratory fitness of their athletes.” (Farrar, Ryan, Mayhew, Jerry, Koch & Alexander, 2010)
Another recent study found subjects burnt an average of 20.2 calories/min during a 20minute kettlebell snatch test (equivalent of running at 6 min mile pace).
Metabolism is quickly elevated with kettlebell training due to multiple muscle groups and your entire neuro-muscular system being activated. In a short time, you can get an excellent workout and keep your metabolism raised for a good while after you finish your training session, therefore burning calories during and after your workout!
An example of this was found in a study of kettlebell complexes. A female client, who requires 2,000 calories/day could burn an extra 400 calories in the following 38 hours after training. With 3 sessions/week her metabolism could be elevated for 114 hours!
Improved body composition
Decreasing body fat and increasing lean muscle is a desirable outcome associated with resistance training. Kettlebell training targets the posterior chain including big muscle groups such as the hamstrings, gluteus maximus and erector spinae. Kettlebell swings are better for your back than traditional weightlifting such as deadlifts. The core is involved in most exercises and some, such as the Turkish Get Up work the body in a controlled manner by holding the kettlebell stationary and above the head during the movement.
So, if you are looking for a fitness regime with maximum benefits … why not try kettlebell training?
WHY EXERCISE?
10 exercise benefits
Weight management.
Exercise supports the most prominent benefit - weight management. It increases our caloric expenditure, helping us lose weight or maintain our ideal weight. Your metabolic rate is optimised, making weight management easier.
Bone and muscle health.
Exercise builds bone and muscle strength. Stronger bones contribute to better balance which means greater stability and less injuries, while stronger muscles contribute to general fitness in carrying out daily activities like climbing the stairs or carrying groceries. Hence your body's muscles remain functionally healthy in the years to come!
Relief from physical pains
Exercise provides rehabilitation for chronic pains such as lower back pain. The right kind of exercise can be a good form of physiotherapy for stubborn aches or long-term injuries.
Protection against health conditions
Exercise reduces the risk of developing chronic diseases and obesity-related diseases like diabetes and heart disease. It helps to keep your blood sugar and insulin at healthy levels.
Younger, healthier skin
Exercise benefits your skin and makes it look more youthful by triggering the production of anti-oxidants. These anti-oxidants repair skin cell damage and stimulate blood flow, improving skin health.
Boosts mental health
Exercise triggers the release of hormones that facilitate the growth of brain cells and boosts blood flow to the brain, allowing it to get more oxygen to function better. This oxygen also helps to improve memory by increasing the size of the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for memory. This slows down your brain’s ageing and also protects the brain against degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and mental disorders like schizophrenia.
Energy level boost
Exercise creates a rush of hormones which causes a significant energy boost that helps you fight fatigue and stay more focused. This is especially helpful for people suffering from chronic fatigue or health conditions that affect energy levels.
Improvements in mood
Exercise releases hormones like endorphins during exercise that evoke positive feelings whilst pushing away negative ones. This makes exercise a good form of therapy for people suffering from anxiety or depression.
More quality sleep
Exercise makes you sufficiently tired at bedtime whilst the stress-relieving effect of exercise helps your mind and body relax so negative thoughts don’t keep you awake. The heating up of your core body temperature during exercise allows your body to cool down significantly by bedtime, promoting restful sleep.
Higher libido
Exercise facilitates blood circulation and flexibility, boosting one’s libido and enhancing the overall experience as well. For older men, exercise helps to reduce symptoms of erectile dysfunction.
Did you know?
- Resistance training raises the resting metabolic rate RMR and continues to burn calories many hours after the workout.
- HIIT burns 25 / 30% more calories than other types of exercise. (high intensity interval training)
- The effect that exercise has on hormones can offset some age-related hormonal changes and, therefore, minimise some of the functional decline.
Testimonials
I never liked going to the gym or doing exercises in general. However, keeping some level of fitness is important so I decided to try working with personal training. Fiona has been my Personal Trainer for the past few months.
Fiona works to my pace, taking into account my limitations while still pushing me to do more and get stronger overall. I clearly feel the difference between my ability now compared to when I started working with her. I appreciate Fiona's holistic approach which means working the whole body rather than just focusing on specific areas and muscles.
The sessions are hard work but at the same time, light-hearted and fun. The time simply flies by. I recognise the importance of training but did not expect to enjoy it. The fact that I do is a tribute to Fiona's skill and way of work.
All in all, I like Fiona's way of work, really enjoy training with her and am happy to recommend her to anyone looking for a Personal Trainer. The lovely rural location and views from her studio is a great side benefit.

Fiona's friendly nature, approachability and empathy dispels all fears and apprehensions anyone might hold about personal training.
She has a genuine mission to help people improve their strength, fitness and mobility, so they can enjoy a better quality of life for longer. In the training sessions, Fiona relays the importance of strength training for health in a manner that truly makes sense and motivates one to improve.
I never thought that personal training and weight training was for me, but my goodness all that mindset did a fast 360 the moment I tried Fiona's first training session in her beautiful countryside gym.
Needing to improve my metabolism, my energy levels and strengthen overall, I went from that fear and apprehension to really looking forward to my training sessions, and the genuine joy of noticing subtle changes and improvements is so satisfying!
I made great progress. I feel so much better overall, I now have more energy and I feel I am stronger, more flexible and more grounded. My focus and productivity also improved, and I am forever grateful to Fiona for helping me on my journey!
Understanding why strength training is important really helps and having someone that can really motivate you is a game changer.

If you are looking to achieve fitness goals then Fiona will help you to reach them. She has worked with us for more than 7 months and I can feel my strength coming back. My husband is benefitting from intense kettlebell exercises.
Fiona will work at a pace which is right for us, but isn't afraid to push us when we need it. No session is ever the same thanks to her immense knowledge of fitness, exercises and strength training. It means you never get bored! All your muscles get a workout.
Fiona's passion for fitness comes through in every session and she enjoys seeing her clients succeed.
Rachel and Stuart
I thoroughly enjoy my personal training with Fiona. She listens and takes account of my personal requirements and any restrictions I might have, constructs a tailored programme that is different and therefore fresh for each session, and makes it fun. I don't feel that I'm working and yet I know at the end that I have been!
I particularly need to concentrate on weight training and, with her careful tutelage, I have worked up to swinging a 14kg kettlebell, which makes me feel pretty good. I am achieving things I didn't expect to master. The beautiful, rural setting and adorable dogs who come in at the end for a cuddle are an added bonus.
Clare
I have been using Fiona for over a year now and I can honestly say she has transformed my attitude on fitness. Our sessions are great fun, lots of new ideas and the use of all the different equipment - it makes it exciting and keeps me interested. Fiona is hard working, honest and very reliable. She openly talks about good nutrition and simple health changes I can make.

I originally started working out with Fiona to improve my balance, posture, flexibility and overall fitness level. Fiona is always incredibly patient with me and varies the programme of activities each week so it never becomes dull of repetitive.
The hour always flies by and it is fun and energising. My balance is so much better and I can't believe how much my flexibility has improved in just a few weeks. I really struggled with certain stretches to begin with and now I can't quite believe I ever found them difficult!
I am not someone who enjoys going to the gym; having tried it in the past, I lost confidence. My weekly sessions with Fiona have helped me to build my confidence and fitness levels. I really look forward to each session.
Gerry
Thank you very much for providing me with tools and information to start me on my new fitness regime. I really enjoyed using new muscles and equipment to increase my flexibility and strength. I would recommend Fiona as she was knowledgeable and knew how to adapt my programme to motivate and support. Thank you very much. Look forward to the next time.
Alex
After starting Fiona's class at Anytime Fitness gym I continued with her on Zoom all through lockdown and since. I now feel stronger and fitter as Fiona has shown me the importance of using weights to build strength and stretches for flexibility and balance. It is due to her ability to motivate that I consider I have made good progress becoming more fit. I particularly value the fact that Fiona modifies the circuits to suit our needs and her routines cover a range of exercises for the whole body, core and cardio.
Sue
Fiona is a very understanding and patient trainer, tailoring the sessions to my needs. She is knowledgeable, cheerful and enthusiastic which makes the time fly by. It's a joy to turn up to her beautiful studio, it is a wonderful place to workout.

I have found Fiona to be professional, supportive and motivational as my personal trainer.
As a long time shift worker, approaching my 60th birthday and retirement, I was aware of having ‘let myself go’ as I had become unfit and overweight with a very sedentary lifestyle. However, I was struggling to make the necessary changes.
Fiona, the master of motivation, developed a 12-week programme for me. With her continued positivity and encouragement, I was able to stick to her programme and make some real and measurable changes in my life; Not only in exercise and activity levels, but, an awareness in healthy eating and hydration levels.
I have increased my strength, stamina, flexibility and energy levels under Fiona’s tutelage. I feel more toned and supple and my outlook on life is much more positive. In the 12 weeks, I lost five kilograms, and have decreased my percentage of body fat and increased my percentage of muscle mass. I still have a way to go but Fiona’s continued support is helpful for the future.
I have found her to be flexible and adaptive to my needs and an excellent personal trainer.

After having a new knee last year, joining the gym has been a great choice. I have learned so many exercises from Fiona that can really help me gain my strength and flexibility back. The wide range of machines available means that I can really target areas. Fiona has been very patient and encouraging. I love coming to the gym now.
Ginny
I thoroughly enjoy my sessions with Fiona - she is a great inspiration and I feel much more flexible, with ever improving balance. Thank you Fiona for your patience and infectious enthusiasm!
Diana
I have been attending Fiona’s PT classes at Anytime Fitness for 6 months. It’s a small intimate group of 2 or 3 people. I have had issues with my right knee and hip for many years but have found that since starting training with Fiona, that I have built up strength and flexibility to the point that I can now complete a full workout with little to no recovery time. Fiona is genuine and down to earth. She works at my pace, tweaking my exercise poses to ensure I am doing them correctly. She is patient and caring, combining her love of fitness with her love of people.
